Innovation in greenhouse horticulture

Dutch Drone Company enables safe greenhouse chalking with drones

In South Holland, permission has been granted for the use of drones for chalking and cleaning greenhouse roofs. Quality Drone Coating (QDC), a collaboration between Dutch Drone Company and contractor Klaas Quartel, makes it possible to carry out risky work at great heights more safely and efficiently and represents an important step in the further innovation of greenhouse horticulture.

Chalking greenhouses is essential to protect crops from excessive sunlight. Traditionally, this is done manually, with employees moving across the greenhouse roof at great heights. Due to economies of scale and taller greenhouses, safety risks have increased in recent years, while finding personnel is becoming increasingly difficult.

Drone technology offers a future-proof alternative for this. Specially developed drones can be used to apply a layer of lime to greenhouse roofs in a controlled manner and clean them again later, without employees having to access the roof. This increases safety and contributes to continuity within a sector that is of great importance to the Westland economy.

Innovation from the Westland region
Permission from DCMR (Dienst Centraal Milieubeheer Rijnmond, the Rijnmond Central Environmental Management Service) makes it possible to carry out this work in South Holland using drones.

Dutch Drone Company supplies the technology and expertise for the use of drones in greenhouse horticulture and thus plays a key role in modernizing a traditional process within the sector.

“The use of drones for chalking and cleaning greenhouses shows how technology can improve safety and efficiency in a sector that is closely linked to Westland. We appreciate Dutch Drone Company bringing this innovation to our region.” – Ultim
